An overhead mount turns a phone into a fixed viewpoint for packaging demonstrations, flat lays, drawing and process videos. Its value is consistency: the framing can stay while hands and materials move below. That consistency disappears when the arm drifts, the desk vibrates or the clamp blocks the working area.
Do not choose by maximum height alone. The geometry between clamp, arm, phone and subject determines whether the camera can reach the centre of the working surface without placing the base in the way.

Clamp geometry
Measure desk thickness, edge shape and any support rail before assuming a clamp will sit flat.
Working reach
The useful reach is the horizontal distance to the subject at the required camera height—not the arm's total length.
Payload
Include the phone, case, lens accessory and light when estimating weight.
Vibration
Long articulated arms amplify movement. Fewer joints and a wider support usually improve recovery after a touch.

The desk is part of the support
A rigid arm on a light, flexible table can still shake. Mount to the most stable edge or a separate support when possible.
Portrait needs clearance
Rotating a large phone may shift the lens away from the arm centre. Test both orientations against the frame.
Leave room for hands
Place the arm and clamp outside the natural movement path. A technically centred camera is not useful if it obstructs the process.

Select the mount as a small piece of studio infrastructure. A simple, rigid route to the right camera position is usually better than many joints that promise every angle.
